Senses of the Snake Umbrella
Artwork Description:
Senses of Snake Umbrella
In Dagara culture, the umbrella has deep significance and meaning symbolizing the essence of royalty and kingship. In Ancient West Africa, only Kings were permitted to use the shade from umbrellas, signifying their command over the powerful sun.
Umbrellas shading the King and Royalty were a central part of all ceremonial and sacred events and processions where royalty was present.
In Ancient Egypt the umbrella was understood to be symbolic of the sacred trinity of Nut, her brother Geb, and their father Shu.
Together the three form an umbrella of Earth (Geb), Air (Shu), and Sky (Nut) over the entire world.
